Vergelle is situated in the heart of the Val d’Orcia, which is part of the Crete Senesi (Siena’s clays) a UNESCO world-heritage site. Landscapes and buildings are preserved for all to enjoy. The Val d’Orcia offers unparalleled views of characteristic Tuscan landscapes with rolling hills, winding riverbeds and acres of olive groves and vineyards. The area has many historic buildings and features and is an art lover’s paradise.

The villa is ideally located for shorter trips to many beautiful towns:

Montalcino, just 15 minutes across the valley, features an ancient fortress, the beautiful Piazza Del Popolo and fantastic views over the Val d'Orcia. This small town has an abundance of small independent shops, wine cellars and famous coffee bars. You can buy wine, leather bags, jewellery, and plenty of other quality local craft ware, if you want to add to the luggage going home!

World famous Montepulciano is 30km away, Pienza, 21 km, San Quirico d’Orcia, 13km. A spa and wellness centre is at Bagno Vignoni, 11km.

Siena, the region’s main historic city, is a short driving distance, about 40km, from the villa, and is a ‘must see’. It plays host to the twice-yearly “Il Palio” – the famous bareback horse race - around Il Campo, the piazza. Il Campo has many excellent restaurants around its perimeter, where you can sit and enjoy a coffee or a glass of wine and watch the world go by.

Florence, famous for all its art and culture is only 105km – you can drive, but a train from Buonconvento (10km) may suit you better.

Further afield, but easily visited for a day out, are the equally beautiful and fascinating towns of Arezzo, Assisi, Perugia, Cortona, Todi and Orvieto, each with its own history, culture and many Renaissance art exhibits.

Away from the towns, a visit to either of the abbeys at Sant’Antimo, or Monte Oliveto Maggiore, will leave you grateful for the timeless peace and tranquillity of this beautiful countryside.

LOCAL FACILITIES

Vergelle is just 4km from Torrenieri, which has a number of shops and which will provide everything you need, a new supermarket, various bars and restaurants, a bank, post office and a pharmacy.

San Giovanni d’Asso, 6 km in the opposite direction has similar facilities.
